In early November 2022, WhatsApp officially rolled out the "Community" feature. This feature was scheduled to be released in 2021. However, it was released in early November 2022.
With the tag line "Organized, Private, Connect", this WhatsApp Community feature presents a communication channel that is structured, easy to use, and end-to-end encrypted. When compared to groups, community features are clearly different. what are the differences? Let's see the article!
Members
You certainly know that WhatsApp groups can accommodate up to 1024 members. In a WhatsApp group, the members are personal contacts that can be added by the admin.
While the WhatsApp Community has a slightly different concept. Indeed, both communities have admins, but members of the WhatsApp Community are groups on WhatsApp. Not personal contacts.
Communities are indeed designed to accommodate several related groups within a larger organization of people, such as neighborhoods or workplaces.
Interaction
When it comes to interaction, the WhatsApp group has more freedom. Of course you know that each member in a WhatsApp group can freely send and reply to messages between the WhatsApp groups. However, this does not apply to the WhatsApp Community.
In a WhatsApp Community, only admins have the authority to send messages. Interaction in the Community is indeed very one-way. As a result, the WhatsApp Community is indeed more suitable for making announcements without any interaction there.
Create Groups or Communities
Everyone can create a WhatsApp group. As long as the number used is already registered with WhatsApp, then anyone can create a WhatsApp group and add contacts to that group.
Meanwhile, the Community concept makes it a little more selective. If you want to create a WhatsApp Community, the contact you use must first become an admin on several groups. Admins can then collect or add the groups they manage into one Community.
Leave Groups or Communities
The concept of WhatsApp group members comes from personal contacts added by the admin. Therefore if you choose to leave the group, it means you will no longer be connected to the group.
Because the concept of Community members is a combination of WhatsApp groups, there is a concern that if you leave, you will also leave the group. But apparently not. If you leave a Community, you will only leave that Community. You will remain a member of the group as long as you do not choose to leave the group.
Management
To create a WhatsApp group, you can access the "New Group" option which is located on the menu for creating a new message. Then all you have to do is add members from the contacts on your smartphone. In the context of deleting a group, it takes a little effort . Deleting a WhatsApp group can be done by the admin by removing members one by one first.
Meanwhile, creating a WhatsApp Community can only be done by the admin by accessing the "Start Community" option in the "Community" tab. It's on the far left with a "Three contacts" icon. To delete, a Community that has been created can be deleted or deactivated by the admin directly via the "Community" tab, without having to remove members one by one first.
Functionally
You can use WhatsApp groups to:
- Combine contacts you know in one conversation.
- Connect with friends and family.
You can use WhatsApp Community to:
- Collects several related groups in a container.
- Keep announcements in a special container for announcements.
- Connected with schools, neighborhoods, classes, and so on in a container.
So, those were some of the differences between WhatsApp Groups and Communities. So use what suits your needs, OK?
