How to find out the WiFi password of the router

If your router still uses the default username and password, the password will be easier to find. Modern WiFi routers come with a default WiFi network name and password. Each router has its own default password, which is often random. 

To find the default password, check the router. You will see a sticker somewhere containing the "SSID" (name of the wireless network) and the password

If you haven't changed the default password, you can use that password to connect to the router. If you don't see the default password printed on your router, try to see the documentation that came with the router for more information.

How to find out WiFi password from Windows

If you have connected to a WiFi network from a Windows laptop, Windows will remember the password for the WiFi network. You can look up the WiFi password on any Windows computer that is currently connected to the WiFi network. 

You just have to open the Control Panel then select Network and Sharing Center. Or you can use the quick method by right-clicking the WiFi icon in the lower right corner, and selecting "Open Network and Sharing Center.

If you are using Windows 10 or above, click the "Open Network & Internet Settings" option. When the Settings window appears, scroll down and click "Network and Sharing Center.

Click the name of the current WiFi connection. Click the "Wireless Properties" button in the WiFi Status window that appears. Click the "Security" tab and activate the "Show characters" checkbox to view hidden passwords. You have managed to find out the forgotten WiFi password.

How to find out a WiFi password that has been connected to Windows

Windows also stores the passwords for the network WiFi you have previously connected to. In Windows 7 and earlier, you can find it from the Network and Sharing Center, but in Windows 8 and Windows 10, you have to use the command prompt. 

  • Windows 7 
Go to the "Manage wireless networks" menu on the left menu of the Network and Sharing Center. You will see a list of the previous networks you have connected to. Double-click the network name to open network properties. 

In the properties window, open the Security tab and check the box next to "Show characters" to view the WiFi password in the "Network security key" section. 

  • Windows 8 and 10 

In Windows 10 and 8.1, you have to use the command prompt to find the previous network password. Right-click the Start button and select "Command Prompt" to quickly open it. 

Then type the following command: 

netsh wlan show profiles
 

You will get a list of WiFi networks that you have accessed before. To find the password for a profile, type: 

netsh wlan show profile name = profilename key = clear 

replace the profilename with the WiFi name. Look for the "Key Content" line to find the WiFi password for that WiFi network.

How to find out WiFi password on Mac

You can also use how to find out the WiFi password from a Mac device. To find WiFi passwords on a Mac, press Command + Space to open the Spotlight search dialog, type "Keychain Access" without the quotes, and press Enter to launch the Keychain Access app. 

Find the WiFi network name in the list, click it, then click the "info" button - at the bottom of the window. Click the checkbox "Show Password" in the window that appears. 

You must enter your Mac username and password to gain access to the password. Just type in the username and password for the Mac account you have. After doing so, the Mac will display the WiFi network password.

How to find out WiFi password from Android

Apart from using a PC, you can also find out the WiFi password from Android. To find out the WiFi password, all you have to do is download the WiFi Password Recovery (you have to choose the one with many start ratings) application on the Play Store. 

Open the WiFi Password Recovery application. Allow apps to access WiFi. After that, the application will display the WiFi history that has been connected to your Android along with the password.
