For various reasons, many people in African countries are leaving their countries in search for greener pastures. The most obvious reason for working in UK is that one will get a monthly salary which is almost equivalent to what one gets in a year in his native country. In this article, I will outline the requirements for one to work in UK and earn a monthly income of around £2500.

Getting a UK work visa is not easy, and requires following lengthy procedures. However, if you happen to have expertise in a field that lacks a professional workforce in the UK, you may find it easy to apply for a work visa. Especially with the new work visa regulations for international students in the UK, as from 2021, finding a job in the UK is now even easier!

European countries especially UK lost quite a number of health workers due to Covid-19. These countries endeavour their health system to be on top of its standard no matter the circumstances. These first world countries prioritise the health sector other than other sectors therefore there is massive recruitment of health workers in the UK.

The British government has published a list of occupations where there is a shortage of British professionals, thus requiring foreign workers to work in these fields. This list is updated annually. There are a lot of fields in which one can find occupation, but in this article I will only focus on becoming a nurse aide which I discovered is easy to meet up with its requirements.

Professional Medical Personnel

The following professions are still understaffed in the UK
  • Medical Doctors
  • Mental Health Nurses
  • Operating Theatre Nurses
  • Intensive Care Nurses
  • Gynecology
  • Paediatrics
  • Anesthesiologist
  • Midwives
  • Renal Nurses
  • General Nurses
  • Assistant Care Nurses (Nurse Aides) ❤️
  • Occupational Health Nurses
In addition, radiography, especially professionals in the field of nuclear medicine, paramedics, and nurses specializing in neonatal intensive care units are also included in the list.

To be able to work as a medical professional in the UK, you must apply for a "Health and Care Worker Visa" type of visa. To be able to obtain a residence and work permit, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Have qualifications as a doctor, nurse, professional in the health sector, as well as a professional in the field of social welfare. For care givers, you need a care giving certification from a recognized institution such as Red Cross Certification. Do a six weeks course at a nearby Red Cross Society and get a certificate.
  2. Have work experience in the relevant field. Do an attachment at a local hospital for at least 3 months.
  3. Attain a "pass" in ielts English test. There is no pass or fail mark on the IELTS English test. Instead, you receive a level or grade score between 1 and 9. This may include a half-point, such as 5.5 for example. A Doctor needs to achieve an IELTS score of 7.5 overall. A Nurse must score at least 7.0 in their reading, listening and speaking, and a score of 6.5 in writing. For Assistants, the overall band score should be 6.5. Globally, the IELTS exam is available in 120 countries at over 1,100 test centres. In Zimbabwe there are two centers which are Harare and Bulawayo.
  4. Do a TB test. Please note - applicants for UK visa longer than six (6) months must obtain this medical certificate before submitting their visa application, so this is a must.
  5. Obtain a police Clearance and a passport.
  6. A Driver's licence is a must.
  7. Have contracted with a clinic or healthcare institution in the UK. You can search here (It is updated daily).
  8. Have a "certificate of sponsorship" from the clinic or health institution where you will work later, complete with detailed information about your role or position later. List of genuine UK sponsors is on this document. (You have to filter the ones for care giving as the document contains all licensed skilled workers sponsors in the UK).
NB: So to apply, you go through the list one by one till you get luck. There are over 6000 companies so an average of 50 companies per day will do.

You will be paid using a standard minimum salary, with pay grades that matches the type of work. Health and Care Worker Visa is valid for 3 to 5 years. After the 3 to 5 years, foreign workers can apply for a permanent residency visa in the UK. This visa will give you the rights and legality to live, work or study in the UK for as long as you want.
