The Complete Short SEO Guide For Biginners

SHARE:

Generally, this strategy is divided into two main categories, namely on-page SEO and off-page SEO. To win the competition to rank first on Google SRPs

The practice of search engine optimization (SEO) involves various optimization strategies. Generally, this strategy is divided into two main categories, namely on-page SEO and off-page SEO. To win the competition to rank first on search results pages (SRPs), we need to understand and utilize both properly.

What is On-Page SEO?

Let's start by understanding what on-page SEO is. On-page SEO is the practice of optimizing pages on a website to get organic traffic and improve website rankings on search results pages (SRPs).

The practice of on-page SEO involves optimizing the HTML of the web page, designing good internal linking, and managing the proper metadata (meta title, meta description, and keyword density). Not only that, the above practices must also be accompanied by quality content and relevant multimedia.

The Importance of On-Page SEO

On-page SEO helps search engines analyze your website and the content on it so that it can be identified when there is a relevant search. More than 50% of existing website traffic comes from search engines. Interestingly, websites that rank high in the SRP have the potential to get 91.5% more traffic than those that are not displayed on the first page of the SRP. Because of this, on-page SEO is important in planning website development and executing an SEO strategy.

Website Optimization with on-page SEO Strategy

The on-page optimization approach means that you have complete control over implementing the SEO strategy on your website. Well, it's important for you to know that these on-page strategies play an important role in helping search engines crawl and understand website content. Check out the following list for some on-page SEO tips you can apply:

1. Choose the right keywords

Keyword research is the main key to success in designing SEO strategies and of course SEO friendly websites. Choosing the right keywords will help you reach the right audience through search engines. So, always remember to choose keywords that are relevant to your business or blog to get quality traffic.

2. Include relevant keywords in the title tag, meta description and first paragraph

After getting the relevant keywords, you need to make sure that you include them in the right places as well. Include the keywords you have chosen in the article title, title tag, meta description and the first 150-200 words in your content. This is to make it easier for search engines to crawl and index your content.

meta description explained

The image above is an example of using the title tag on the IKEA website. The title tag in question is the title of the page that appears at the very top of the listing, in this example “Kitchen Appliances – IKEA”. While the short description under the title tag is the part that we call the meta description.

3. Include Meta Data

Meta data can be found in the HTML code of each page on your website. Specifically, the meta data that will be included in it is the title tag of the page and the meta description. The search engine will then use this data to recognize and identify the website content.

4. Loading images that have been optimized for search engines

In designing an SEO friendly website, of course you will also include content in the form of images. In fact, search engines have difficulty identifying images. Therefore, you need to make sure you don't forget to fill in the title and alt text of the image with the right keywords .

Pro Tip: Remember to always include alternative text by entering keywords as naturally as possible. Some SEO experts will advise against keyword stuffing. Of course they're right, but inserting the smartest possible keywords in the image when you describe the image is a ninja way.

5. Design a good website site map structure

The next thing you need to pay attention to is the structure of your website. Make sure you design a website with a good structure because website structure is an important aspect of an SEO strategy. This structure will be used by search engines to find and determine which pages are the most important on your website.

Case study: I was once hired by an online store to audit their website. Incidentally, this online store uses Shopify. What I found from the audit was that the website has a very inefficient structure and a lot of page duplication.

Then, maybe you will ask me, “what does a good site map structure look like? What is an inefficient structure like?”

Some experts may explain the system 'breadcrumbs' on the navigation. But, simply you need to have an efficient site map to make mapped each page with a good structure.

6. Create a neat and orderly URL structure

Not only your website that needs to be designed SEO friendly, the URLs of the content in it must also be SEO friendly. SEO friendly URLs help search engines understand the content and purpose of the content. Ideally, SEO friendly URLs do not consist of too many characters and include the targeted keywords.

  • Homepage: www.domainname.com
  • Category page : www.domainname.com/category/
  • Category 1 page : www.domainname.com/category/the-name-of-category1
  • Category 2 page : www.domainname.com/category/the-name-of-category2
  • Blogs : www.domainname.com/blog
  • Article of blog post : www.domainname.com/title-of-article OR www.domainname.com/blog/title-of-article
  • etc
Pro Tip: Use target keywords in the permalink of each category or blog post that is tailored to the search intent.

7. Build strong internal links

Internal links are a series of hyperlinks in certain parts of a piece of content that direct the audience to other relevant content on the same website. By inserting internal links, you will help search engines find, index and understand the content of the pages on your website. If practiced properly, internal links can build page authority for pages that are considered important and relevant by search engines.

8. Create quality content

Quality content is of course one of the keys to doing on-page SEO. Google itself has created guidelines for good content writing to comply with the EAT rules, which stands for Expert, Authoritative and Trustworthy.

Expert refers to the credentials and credibility of a content and its author, authoritative indicates how often your website and content is referred to for certain topics and keywords, while trustworthy means that your content contains correct information and does not mislead visitors.

9. Create comprehensive content

In addition to meeting EAT rules, make sure your content includes comprehensive information. Why is this important? Search engines always want to make it easier for their users to search. One of them is to display complete and comprehensive content. Therefore, if your content covers a topic thoroughly, the potential for your website and content to rank first will be higher.

10. Avoid duplicate content

When a search engine indexes your content and finds the same content on another URL, you won't be penalized directly. However, this can affect the ranking your content gets. This is because search engines mark the content as appreciably similar. As a result, search engines will find it difficult to determine which version is the most complete and most relevant to the user's search goals.

11. Short website loading time

Loading time is often overlooked in designing SEO friendly websites. In fact, according to Google, 53% of users will leave a website if the loading time required to display content is more than 3 seconds. Loading time can be shortened in several ways, for example by responsive website design and well-compressed content sizes and images.

12. Add content elements that your competitors have

When you create content to target certain keywords, do your research first and see who your competitors are targeting that keyword and have already ranked first to third. What do these three pieces of content have in common? What's the difference? What elements does the website have in the first position?

Usually the website in the first position, the first page has almost all the elements needed in a content (plus off-page optimization, such as link building of course).

Pro Tip: If the first page has 800 words of content, has image elements, internal links, external links, and has placed all relevant keywords in each content section. The way you can compete with this is by creating content that is more than 800 words (could be 900 words, it could be more), copy the optimizations already done on those first position pages, and add other elements, such as videos and FAQs.

13. Design a responsive website

It is important for you to design a responsive website so that it can provide a comfortable viewing and surfing experience for audiences from different devices, especially those who access the website via mobile devices. With a responsive design, the required loading time will be shorter and can improve website performance and ranking.

Search engines like Google regularly update their algorithms to better understand users' search goals and display more relevant and targeted search results. Therefore, you need to continue to follow the development of this algorithm and also optimize your website and content.
